Topic: Psychotropic Drugs: What You Need to Know About Standards of Care and Best Practices.
Description: Psychotropic Drug use including antipsychotics are overused in long-term care which has many adverse reactions for residents, particularly those who have a Dementia related Diagnosis. To make matters worse, Illinois ranks as the worst in the country for overprescribing these drugs. During this discussion, Richard Mallot from the Long-Term Care Community Coalition will provide background on the standards of care for nursing home residents and the problem of the widespread, inappropriate use of antipsychotics, particularly on residents with dementia. Discussion will focus on how this happens, why it is a problem, what appropriate dementia care looks like, and advocacy tips and tools.
