EngAging Illinois:

It's About All of Us

Everyone plays a role in making Illinois a great place to live, work, support family, and grow older. EngAging Illinois: A Comprehensive Plan for Living Well establishes priorities and policies to make sure our state, counties, cities, and towns are great places to grow up AND grow old. It will help all of us — no matter where we live, how much we earn, what we look like, what we believe, or our abilities — to live well and to age with a sense of security and possibility.

EngAging Illinois

EngAging Illinois is a groundbreaking, multisector plan that positions Illinois among the first states in the nation to develop a comprehensive strategy addressing the needs of older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers. The plan establishes a decade-long roadmap through 2036 for the state, outlining strategies in four key focus areas:

  • Creating Livable and Connected Communities
  • Ensuring Health for All Ages
  • Investing in Caregivers
  • Affording Aging

Representing The Best of Illinois

"EngAging Illinois embodies the engagement and thoughtful input of hundreds of people, representing the best of Illinois," said Governor JB Pritzker in the Plan. "This bold plan reflects the priorities of the people we serve and the role that state government should play in creating an age-friendly Illinois that other states will admire and emulate. We all want to be part of a thriving, multigenerational society, and EngAging Illinois is a smart and strong step in that direction."

The plan was developed through an extensive collaborative process established by Governor Pritzker's Executive Order 2024-02, involving 15 state agencies, a 25-member Community Advisory Council, and nine public engagement sessions across Illinois that gathered input from hundreds of residents.

"EngAging Illinois speaks loud and clear that older adults, all of us as we age, are a priority here in the State of Illinois," Mary Killough, Director of the Illinois Department on Aging, said in the Plan. "This comprehensive plan arrives right on time. It is about all of us, working together to create a State full of age-friendly cities, towns, and communities."
